The United Nations University (UNU) is an international community of scholars, engaged in research, postgraduate training and dissemination of knowledge in furthering the purposes and principles of the Charter of the United Nations, its member states and peoples. Campus Computing Centre (C3)
 
The Campus Computing Centre (C3) serves as the technology arm of the University, providing user-focused leadership and strategic vision in institutional planning and support for the University’s information and communications technology (ICT) infrastructure, resources and services. The computing environment on the UNU Tokyo campus offers a diverse range of ICT resources geared to increase individual productivity, and support and enhance education and research, while working to reduce our carbon footprint through the use of virtualization technology and power-efficient computing platforms. We are looking for passionate and talented web developers who can ideally work from our office in Tokyo or Kuala Lumpur, but we are also open to candidates who are interested in working from remote.
 
Successful candidates will be high-energy, talented professionals who can successfully combine his/her expertise in web based application development with business acumen necessary to drive our applications to the next level. In addition, the ideal candidate should be keen to take on challenges with the desire to explore and extend their skills with emerging technologies and will have strong communication skills to work in a multicultural, international environment.

Web Developer (CTC)
Kuala Lumpur (Malaysia) - Tokyo - Telecommute
Responsibilities:
Working under the direction of the Chief of ICT and Director of Campus Computing Centre, the web developer will undertake the following tasks in conjunction with other members of C3: 
  • Assist in the design, engineering, testing, implementation, and operational support of the web applications;
  • Proactively identify opportunities for the development and enhancement of software;
  • Develop software specifications by analyzing user requirements;
  • Ensure all relevant systems documentation and training materials are maintained;
  • Continually update technical knowledge and skills by attending in-house and/or external courses, reading manuals and accessing new applications;
  • Undertake other duties and specific projects as directed, which may include researching new technology and developing innovative approaches to new challenges.

Requirements:
  • A university Degree or equivalent qualification in a related field of study;
  • At least three (3) years of work experience in web development;
  • Familiarity with open source Content Management System (CMS);
  • Knowledge in the following tools and technologies is essential:
    • Web development frameworks (e.g., CodeIgniter, Kohana)
    • RESTful web services
    • PHP / HTML / CSS
    • Database administration / SQL
    • JavaScript libraries, (e.g., jQuery, YUI)
  • Practical exposure to the following tools and technologies is desirable:
    • Linux administration
    • Graphic design
    • Regular expressions
  • Excellent communications skills, with fluency in both oral and written English. Knowledge of another United Nations official language is an asset;
  • Strong analytical skills and able to work under minimal supervision with high level of resilience;
  • Good team player with strong inter-personal skills demonstrated by the ability to work in a multi-cultural, multi-ethnic environment with sensitivity and respect for diversity.

Remuneration:
 
Remuneration will commensurate with qualifications and experience.
 
Duration of Contract:
 
This is a full-time employment on a one (1) year Consultant Contract (CTC) with UNU, with the possibility for renewal subject to requirements and satisfactory work performance.
 
This is a locally recruited post; no relocation expenses or allowances apply. The successful candidate will be employed under a local contract and will not hold international civil servant status nor be a "staff member" as defined in the United Nations Staff Rules and Regulations. UNU does not sponsor a working visa for this position.
